Applications
Cutting Tools and Abrasives: Due to its hardness, TaC is often used in the production of cutting tools, particularly in machining high-strength materials. It’s also used as an abrasive material.
Coatings: TaC is used in coatings for wear resistance and to protect surfaces exposed to high temperatures and corrosive environments. It is often applied using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques.
Additive in Composite Materials: TaC is added to metal-matrix composites and ceramic-matrix composites to enhance their mechanical properties and temperature resistance.
Nuclear Reactors: Tantalum Carbide is sometimes used in nuclear reactors as a material for control rods due to its neutron absorption properties and stability at high temperatures.
Aerospace Applications: The material is used in aerospace applications for components that must withstand extreme temperatures and mechanical stress, such as in rocket nozzles and heat shields.

Pressureless Sintering of Tantalum Carbide Ceramics without Additives
- Using fine tantalum carbide (TaC) powder with narrow particle-size distribution, monolithic TaC ceramics with a relative density of 97.5% was obtained by pressureless sintering at 2300°C without adding additives. The monolithic TaC ceramics had a very fine microstructure with grain size of about 2 μm. It is considered that the small particle size and uniform particle-size distribution of TaC powder are important factors for preparing dense TaC ceramics with fine microstructure.
